Day 2 consisted of a food tour and a night tour. This gave us the opportunity to eat authentic food and see the city.

I HIGHLY recommend food tours. Some are better than others for amount of food so definitely check reviews when looking at some. This one fed us a LOT. We needed a nap and not to move for a bit after eating. We did do some stops between; one stop to a carpet store where we got to see one being made and a stop at another aromatherapy place. It seems like a lot of tours do these. This was a nice break between eating though.

The tour started with breakfast which included some falafel and shakshuka. It was all very good. This tour was also just us and our driver and guide. We were expecting a bit more info on the foods than we got but it was still a good experience.

For street food type we stopped for koshary and some ice cream and juice (I got sugar cane).

Then the lunch was a large spread that typical families eat (according to our guide). We did feel bad for the amount of food left at that point but our guide and driver did take leftovers thankfully. Lunch included some chicken, lamb, veggies, and the delicacy seen on the left here: pigeon. We weren’t a huge fan of the pigeon but everything else was delicious. A lot of the food was heavier as well so that changes how you feel after.

The Night tour was also tons of fun and we greatly appreciated having someone to drive us around and show us things. We got to go to the top of Cairo tower, take a sailboat on the Nile, walk through the markets and eat some street food. While you can probably do most of this on your own as well it’s just a lot easier with a guide if you don’t speak the language and don’t have an easy means of transportation. Our guides were super nice and helpful and even willing to stop somewhere else for us (we wanted to hit a bookstore to try to find a copy of Pride and Prejudice in Arabic since we decided that would be a great souvenir).
For the market, he did caution us to leave our phones in our bag and keep that in front of us and zipped since it’s a busy place. We made some stops at some stalls with people he knew and were able to get some of our souvenirs. This part seemed to be as long as we wanted but we didn’t need too long in there.
Then he took us around the city a bit and told us about some history and different buildings. Cities are so different night to day so it was nice getting a bit of both during our trip. At the end we got food nearby, shawarma, which was really good.

Enjoy the cat and dog below. I love seeing animals everywhere. Everything is so different places and yet, so similar.
